Earlier this week it was announced that, as a result of an internal review, Sinn Féin county councillor Kieran McCarthy had been expelled and councillor Melissa Mullane had been suspended.
Councillor Mullane has since confirmed to breakingnews.ie that she intends to appeal her suspension and will not be taking interviews or making any statements until the appeals process is complete.
69 members of Sinn Féin have since left the party in Fermoy and Cobh.
Sinn Féin has refused to clarify what the review of the group entailed or why they decided to take action against the two councillors.
Cork East Sinn Féin TD Sandra McLellan said she welcomed the outcome of the party’s internal review and was “looking forward to getting on with the party’s work in the constituency.”
Deputy McLellan said she intended to stand for Sinn Féin in the next General Election representing Cork East.
“There can be no doubt that the internal review in Cork East has been tough for party members. It has been long but it has been thorough and I believe that it has been fair.
“Nobody likes to lose party members but now is the time to move on from this whole episode and I am looking forward to getting on with the party’s work in the constituency and building for the future.”
