Sinn Féin is expected to meet with its east Cork members today after a reported 69 of them left the Fermoy and Cobh cumanns.
The meeting is in reaction to the expulsion of Cllr Kieran McCarthy and suspension of Cllr Melissa Mullane after an internal party review.
In a statement last night, the 54 members of the Cobh cumann said they were resigning because of the undemocratic manner in which their colleagues were treated.
The night before, 15 members were said to have resigned in Fermoy.
The statement from the Cobh members said they "deplore the unjust, undemocratic and reprehensible manner in which our two comrades were and are being treated by our former party".
A meeting of Sinn Féin members is due to happen in Mallow tonight, with more resignations expected.

Mr McCarthy confirmed that he had received a new email from Sinn Féin about his expulsion but refused to comment further, saying: “It has no evidence”.
He claims Sinn Féin have done a “hatchet job” and are trying to keep him out of the race in east Cork at the next general election.
