SF have felt DUP heat, insists Wilson

The DUP can take the credit for forcing Sinn Féin to move towards supporting the police, the party’s East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson insisted tonight.

The DUP can take the credit for forcing Sinn Féin to move towards supporting the police, the party’s East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson insisted tonight.

Mr Wilson was basking in a strong performance by his party which saw him and his two running mates David Hilditch and George Dawson comfortably retain their Assembly seats.

Former Alliance Party leader Sean Neeson was also proud of another strong showing from his party at the count in the Antrim Forum.

Mr Wilson, however, cited his party’s strong performance as further proof that the Ulster Unionist Party’s strategy had failed and the DUP had been proved right.

“We want devolution to work this time and not to collapse as it did last time under the Ulster Unionist Party,” he declared.

“Sinn Féin have come a long way. Their representative now supports the police and publicly call on their supporters to cooperate with the police.

“We do take some of the credit for this for this huge movement from Sinn Féin. Some said it could never be done but we did it.”

Alliance candidate Sean Neeson pointed out his party’s performance in the constituency had been steadily increasing over the last few years since 2005.

He said it was clear Alliance were gaining despite others having written them off.

Mr Neeson said: “I am delighted with the increase in my votes. It shows the revival of the Alliance Party.”
