Seven held in burglaries investigation

06/09/2008 - 16:40:46
Police in Belfast today arrested seven men for questioning in connection with burglaries and attempted burglaries in the south of the city.

The men, aged from their early 30s to their late 40s, were detained in overnight operations.

Chief Inspector Andrew Freeburn said: “Burglary offences are a strategic priority for B District policing and we are firmly committed to bringing more people before the courts.

“Police remain dedicated to addressing the burglary issues within South Belfast and these arrests are a result of our proactive approach.”

He urged anyone who witnessed a burglary or saw anything suspicious to contact the police immediately.

He also encouraged property owners to be vigilant when leaving their properties and to ensure that all doors and windows were locked and secured and any valuables within the house kept out of sight of passers-by.

A major crackdown on burglary in Belfast has resulted in a 25% drop in break-ins, according to the PSNI.

Operation Heartbreak has seen 109 arrests as part of a targeted response in two months.

On Thursday police took the unusual step of publishing pictures and details of eight men they went to interview about burglaries and similar crime in Belfast.

The latest seven arrests did not involve any of the published suspects and were made outside Operation Heartbreak.
