Seven arrested in connection with Belfast street violence

Police in Belfast have arrested seven people in connection with loyalist street violence in the Woodvale area of city yesterday.

The disturbance began at around midday, when a gang of youths attacked police conducting searches as part of investigations into UVF activity.

The youths hijacked at least seven vehicles and set them on fire before attacking PSNI officers with petrol bombs, stones, bottles and other missiles.

Further violence erupted later in the day in the same area and water cannon were deployed to disperse the rioters.

Two of those arrested in connection with the clashes are due in court today charged with public order offences.
