Fine Gael Senator, Michael Finucane, called for an Honours List to be established in Ireland so that Ireland can pay tribute to outstanding citizens.

Fine Gael Senator, Michael Finucane, called for an Honours List to be established in Ireland so that Ireland can pay tribute to outstanding citizens.

His comments came after child welfare campaigner Christina Noble - was today honoured with a similar British accolade in London from Prince Charles for her work in Vietnam with children through her Christina Noble foundation.

"There is no way for Ireland to officially acknowledge her achievements. I have previously brought this idea to the Taoiseach, who was very receptive but it was dismissed by others because it was considered an imitation of an English system.

"It is time we had an honours system in this country. I saw it referred to recently when Richard Harris died. People said it was unfortunate he could not be recognised in his own country. We should move in a positive direction and recognise the era in which we live."
