A Labour Senator has today called on Bertie Ahern to resign from the President's Council of State.

James Heffernan also said that the portraits of the former Taoiseach and those of Charles Haughey and Albert Reynolds should be removed from display in Leinster House.

It follows the Mahon report which found Bertie Ahern had failed to give a true account of his public finances.

Senator Heffernan says Mr Ahern is not fit to sit on the President's Council of State.

"He's not the kind of person that I think our president, Michael D Higgins, should be taking advice from," said Senator Heffernan.

"If he has any respect for that position on the Council of State, maybe he would withdraw himself."
