Secondary school teachers announce two days of strike action

Second level teachers have announced two days of strike action over plans to reform the Junior Cert.

The ASTI and TUI unions will strike on Tuesday, December 2, and a further day in January.

The unions - which represent 27,000 teachers - say their key concerns about internal assessment are yet to be addressed by the Department of Education.

General secretary of the ASTI, Pat King, said they regret having to take this action, but they have no choice.

He said: "What teachers are campaigning for is to protect standars in schools and standards in education.

"While it is most inconvenient for students and parents that teachers will be going on strike, our aim is to protect long term the standards in education that students are getting."
