A major search and rescue operation is under way in Cork city for a man in his 20s.

A major search and rescue operation is under way in Cork city for a man in his 20s.

The alarm was raised at around 4.50am when the man was seen entering the River Lee from Patrick's bridge.

The Valentia coast guard unit and lifeboat were launched along with the Waterford Rescue helicopter which conducted an extensive night search and is continuing its operation this morning.

Naval divers have now joined the search.

They are focusing their efforts between the Brian Boru and Michael Collins bridge.
