Search called off for missing fisherman

The search for a Spanish fisherman who went missing from a trawler off the Cork coast, has been stood down.

The alarm was raised at around 4am this morning as the trawler "Ecco Homo" fished around 25 miles south west of Mizen head.

The coastguard helicopters from Shannon and Waterford, along with RNLI lifeboats from Baltimore and Castletownbere, and a number of local fishing boats, took part in the search.

The naval service ships the LE Aisling and LE Emer also joined the search operation.

However, hopes of finding the man alive have now faded due to water temperatures and heavy swells and the search has been stood down.
