Scientists: Stomach operation 'can reverse the effects of Type 2 Diabetes'

Scientists say a new stomach operation could cure and reverse the effects of Type 2 Diabetes.

Medical experts from across the globe will gather at University College Dublin today to discuss the development, which has been spearheaded by Science Foundation Ireland.

10% of Ireland's health budget goes towards treating the disease and the complications it can cause for patients.

However, Professor Carel Le Roux says not enough of the procedures are being carried out in Ireland.

Prof. Le Roux said: "What we have now found is that if we use medication, we can slow the disease down, but we can't stop it.

"But for the first time, we now have evidence that if we do an operation on the stomach we can turn the clock back, and we can make the complications of diabetes better, or we can stop them moving forward at all."
