The infection that contributed to the death of Savita Halappanaavar went undiagnosed for three days at Galway University Hospital, according to a draft report into her death.

The report, published in today's Evening Herald, also shows that staff at the hospital should have considered a termination for Savita days before her death on October 28.

The report, which has been seen by The Evening Herald, details a litany of medical failures - including a lack of clarity among key staff about who was responsible for acting on blood tests which showed a possible infection on the day Savita was admitted to hospital.

Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte says the report appears to support the Government's moves to legislate for the X case.

"The suggestion seems to be that...there are no clear guidelines here and that doctors felt that their hands were tied," he said.

"That seems to me to be more tangible, hard evidence than we might have expected to support the measures embarked on by Government to legislate for the X case."

The Health Minister James Reilly said he had not yet received the report. He said he expected the report would be complete in the next 10 days.
