Sarkozy here to listen not lecture, says MEP Ryan
Fianna Fáil MEP Eoin Ryan has today said that French president Nicolas Sarkozy should be made welcome during his visit to visit Ireland.
"We must put this visit into perspective," said Ryan. "Nicolas Sarkozy is the president of the European Council, and he is de facto leading the work of the EU Governments in Europe for the next six months, just as Bertie Ahern did when he was president of the European Council back in 2004."
"I believe that President Sarkozy is welcome to visit Ireland and to talk to the Irish Government and to interested parties about the future direction of the European Union.
"I do not believe for one moment that he is coming here to lecture the Irish people about the Lisbon Reform Treaty. I believe that he is coming to Ireland to listen.
"There is no quick fix solution in Europe post the defeat of the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland. We must work through all the issues before us within a European context in a very careful, open and diplomatic manner."
