Samaritans Ireland is urging people who feel down over the Christmas period to contact them.

The service has recorded an 18% increase in the use of its email, text and face-to-face services in the last 12 months.

The emotional support helpline said Friday and Saturday nights between 12am and 1am are the busiest time for calls with out-of-hours contact up by 9%.
