Salt supplies set to run out on Sunday

08/01/2010 - 09:10:22
Ireland's local authorities could start to run out of salt in just two days time - with more severe weather forecast from Sunday.

Many schools remain closed again today, and public transport is being curtailed as the country struggles with the ongoing cold snap.

The government's emergency response committee is expected to hear from the National Roads Authority later on the efforts to get more salt and grit for the roads.

Temperatures in Baltinglass, Co Wicklow this morning reached -13.7 degrees Celcius.

Another biting frost has led to treacherous conditions where ice failed to clear yesterday.

The Government has conceded that Ireland will next week receive only half the amount used this week - and some supplies could run out in two days' time.

This could force the NRA and local authorities in making tough decisions about what roads to keep open - and what roads to close.

Met Éireann is warning that from Sunday, there is an increased risk of significant accumulations of snow again in the east, and for the first time, in the south.
