Rural lobby group seeks research into causes of suicide

A lobby group campaigning for rural development has called for the establishment of a research project to assess the root causes of suicide in Ireland.

Irish Rural Link said suicide was having a devastating effect on rural area and it hoped such research could help prevent people from taking their own lives.

Official figures for 2003, the last year for which statistics are available, show that 444 suicides were formally recorded that year, but those working in the area believe the real figure is considerably higher.
