2013 has been a bad year on Irish roads, with 189 deaths in collisions over the past 12 months – an increase of 27 compared to last year.
Brian Farrell of the Road Safety Authority says the rise in motorcyclist deaths in particular is very worrying.
"Nearly twice as many motorcyclists died … that's 27 lives lost compared to 16 last year," he said.
"The weather may have been a factor, brining more bikers out on the roads. But until we do a more detailed analysis, it's difficult to say for sure."
