Local authorities are warning that flooding along the River Shannon could reach 2009 levels in the coming days.
Areas from Limerick up to Athlone are on high alert for the rest of the week, with rain and wind warnings in place again today.
In County Clare the Defence Forces have been deployed to assist the Council in the Springfield area of Clonlara, after water levels rose dramatically last night in the Lower River Shannon.
Athlone businessman Kieran Hynes says the floods will be unstoppable if they hit 2009 levels again: “Sandbags as we found in 2009 in this situation because the water is constant against the walls and the doors outside, they just seep through.
“It won’t be able to stop it if it reaches the level of 2009, the sandbags just won’t be able.
“Our building is an old building, it just seeps up through the floors, seeps in through the walls, seeps in everywhere as a matter of fact, the urnials are three-quarters full this morning of water so that means it is going back up through the sewage system.”
