Rising number of wealthy students getting grants

A rising number of students from well-off families are reportedly getting college grants from local authorities across the country.

Reports this morning say almost one-third of higher education grants are now going to students from managerial, professional and farming backgrounds.

The percentage of local authority grant recipients coming from these groups reportedly increased by 4% to more than 28% between 2003 and 2004.

This morning's reports say more than a third of students receiving grants from Vocational Education Committees are also from well-off backgrounds.
