Richard Hinds guilty of Furlong murder, sentenced to five years minimum

Richard Hinds has been found guilty of the murder of Irish student Nicola Furlong in Japan.

Nineteen-year-old Hinds, from Memphis Tennessee, has been sentenced to no less than five and no more than 10 years, with labour, in prison in a court in Tokyo this morning.

Hinds was tried as a minor - he turns 20 shortly.

He had admitted to having both hands on the 21-year-old Wexford girl's neck on the night she died, but maintained he was innocent of her murder.

The judge said Nicola Furlong was on no way at fault in her murder, as had been suggested by the defence. The judge said theiy had "tainted her honour" with those suggestions.
