Revenue's IT update delays mortgage interest relief payments

04/02/2012 - 08:31:05
It is reported that more then 270,000 people, who are eligible for the increased rate of mortgage interest relief, have still not received the payment.

According to the Irish Times, Revenue is blaming the delay on problems with its IT system.

It said that delays in updating the ICT systems of Revenue and the country's main lenders means that thousands of homeowners, who were due the extra money in January, will now have to wait until at least April for the payment.

The Government announced in the Budget last December that mortgage interest relief would increase to 30% for first-time buyers, who bought their homes between 2004 and 2008, provided they were owner-occupiers.

It is estimated the scheme will cost the Exchequer €52m this year and could be worth up to €2,000 a year in tax relief for some couples.
