More than five million cigarettes, with a retail value of €2.5m, have been seized by Revenue at the Port of Cork.

The 'Eton' brand cigarettes which were described on a ship's manifest as "cardboard boxes" were uncovered in a container which had travelled from Malaysia via Singapore and Rotterdam.

At Dublin Port, around 300 litres of alcohol was seized and more than 4,000 cigarettes were found on an Irish-registered van that disembarked a ferry from Liverpool.

Yesterday, at Dublin Airport, 18,000 Winston brand cigarettes worth almost €9,000 were found in the luggae of a 25-year-old Moldovan woman who had arrived on a flight from Moscow via Charles De Gaulle.

She appeared in court today where she was remanded in custody until next Tuesday.
