Officers from Revenue have seized a shipment of 2,000 pairs of counterfeit Nike runners with an estimated value of €292,000.

Officials say the seizure was the result of "routine profiling", and the runners were discovered in a shipping container coming from China.

A spokesperson said the merchandise is believed to have been intended for the "lucrative" Christmas market.

"Revenue would like to take this opportunity to remind members of the public that the purchase of counterfeit goods is damaging to legitimate businesses," the taxation body said.

"Because of the lack of regulation of the way in which they are produced, can pose serious health and safety risks to consumers."
