Revenue may collect new broadcasting charge
The Minister for Communications is considering tasking the Revenue Commissioners with collecting the new Broadcasting Charge.
Pat Rabbitte says replacing the current TV Licence with the new charge is necessary - due to changes in technology and high evasion rates.
Harry Browne, a lecturer in Journalism at DIT says it's an unusual move, but he thinks it could become more common:
"This particular way of updating the fee and not calling it a licence any more - in other words, you don't need to have a television set to have to pay it - seems to be a novel introduction," he said.
"On the other hand, it's the sort of thing that's been discussed in a lot of countries."
