Revenue head to be hauled before committee over property tax chaos
The head of the Revenue Commissioners has been asked to appear before the Oireachtas Finance Committee to explain why some people are being asked to pay next year's property tax this month.
It follows criticism of the timing and operation of the scheme after Revenue sent a letter to thousands of households in recent weeks about the tax.
Concerns have been raised about those who are paying by debit or credit card who are obliged to pay this month, not next year.
The Labour leader and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has asked Revenue to reconsider the deadline - saying no one should have to pay next year's tax this year - a criticism echoed by the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton.
However, Revenue said people can avail of alternative methods of payment which mean the money would not be due until next year.
The Finance Committee's Chairperson, Ciarán Lynch has written to the head of the Revenue Commissioners, Josephine Fehily, asking her to appear before the committee and explain the structure, timing and operation of the property tax scheme.
