A woman who threatened to jump into the River Shannon tonight has been rescued by emergency services.

At approximately 9.15pm Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service received an alert about a female, in her mid 30's, threatening to enter the water at O'Callaghan Strand, Limerick.

Swift water rescue crews attached to the fire service made contact with the woman on the quayside within three minutes of receiving the emergency call.

Volunteer crews from the Corbett Suicide Prevention Patrol -- which patrols the river at night attempting to prevent people taking their own lives -- also made initial contact with the woman and aided in the rescue operation.

Fire officers, trained in river rescues, launched their Rescue Boat "Fireswift", however the woman was treated at the scene by HSE paramedics.

The woman was transferred to University Hospital Limerick where her she is believed to be in a distressed but stable condition.
