A report on the removal of two Roma children from their families in Dublin and Athlone last October has been handed over to Justice Minister Alan Shatter.

The report was carried out by the Children’s Ombudsman Emily Logan, who was given special powers to investigate the gardaí and the HSE over the two cases.

The inquiry examined the circumstances surrounding the removal of two children from their Roma families in Dublin and Athlone on suspicion over their identities.

A seven-year-old girl was returned to her parents in Tallaght within two days following DNA tests, while a two-year-old boy was given back to his parents in Athlone within a day, following local enquiries.

It is expected to take three weeks before the report is published.
