Rent supplement cuts 'making people homeless'

Homeless charity Focus Ireland has said that cuts to rent supplements are forcing people on to the streets.

The group said that rent supplements have been cut by an average of 28% over the past three years and that the changes are putting more households in debt.

Focus Ireland is warning that any further cuts will put more people on the streets.

Director of advocacy Mike Allen said that the Government must ensure that does not happen.

"What we're saying to the Government is: 'This is your policy, you've repeatedly assured people that people aren't losing their homes, it's your responsibility to make sure that your policies don't cause homelessness, and it's your responsibility to put in place the research to look at the scale of it'," he said.
