The Health Minister James Reilly has said he wants the HSE investigation into the death of Savita Halappanavar to stand up to the "scrutiny of the world".
Dr Reilly said he does not want the family of the 31-year-old left in limbo, but he insists it is important that the report into her death be thorough.
Savita was 17 weeks pregnant when she died from septicemia at University Hospital Galway last month, her husband has said she was refused a termination.
The HSE will appoint an independent, external expert to investigate her death.
Minister Reilly has said that he is also considering a separate, HIQA report, but it is important not to 'crowd' the situation.
Dr Reilly said: "I want this expedited as quickly as possible, and I have made that very clear.
"I want to give the family certainty as soon as possible and not have them left in limbo for a moment longer than is necessary.
!I want the findings of this to stand up to the scrutiny of the world."
