Reilly: HSE review into Savita case 'moving at pace'

The Health Minister James Reilly is not due to meet with Savita Halappanavar's husband despite being in Galway today.

Dr Reilly said he is prepared to meet with Praveen Halappanavar, but he has received no request for such a meeting either from Mr Halappanavar or his legal team.

The board of the Health Information and Quality Authority is currently deciding if it will carry out its own investigation.

However, a solicitor for Mr Halappanavar said a full public inquiry into the 31-year-old's death is the only acceptable option.

Minister Reilly said the involvement of HIQA would be a positive development, but the HSE clinical review will proceed.

He said: "The clinical review is continuing, it must do so because we have to reassure the women using Galway Hospital that it is safe.

"We have to satisfy ourselves about that too. That is moving ahead at pace and it will be finished very shortly.

"The information that they gather can then be used by HIQA, who I know are meeting to decide whether they will come in or not. I think that will be a really positive development and would add another dimension to this."
