Reilly and HSE chief to brief committee on UHI and ambulance service

Minister James Reilly will update the Dail's Health Committee this morning on issues including Universal Health Insurance proposals and the Ambulance Service.

The Minister and the Director General of the HSE, Tony O'Brien, are giving the committee a quarterly update.

Committee Chairman, Deputy Jerry Buttimer, says the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise is also on the agenda.

Later, The Minister for Health and former Health Commissioner David Byrne are among a number of key Irish personnel attending the first ever EU Summit on chronic diseases in Brussels.

A set of policy recommendations will be formulated on how the medical, social and economic burden of chronic diseases should be tackled in the European Union now, and in the future.

Peggy Maguire from the Dublin office of the European Institute on Women's Health says a major lifestyle shift is needed if people are to avoid chronic diseases in the years ahead.
