A red grouse recovery programme in Co. Mayo is making progress.

A new report from the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht shows a doubling in red grouse numbers in the Owenduff/Nephin Complex in Co Mayo from 2002 to 2012.

In 2000, the European Court of Justice took a case against Ireland in relation to the failure to protect the habitat of the red grouse.

This led to an improvement in habitat quality which is being linked to the recovery of the species.
