It is understood that Ulster Bank's parent group, RBS, is considering legal action against their software provider - over the technical glitch which has left thousands of customers without access to cash.
According to the Financial Times, there is a significant chance of action being taken against the American company CA Technologies.
It comes after Ulster Bank warned it will be by early next week before normal service at the bank is restored.
The Bank said that staff are working around the clock to clear the backlog of payments - and that no customers will be out of pocket because of the glitch.
Head of Card Services at the Irish Payment Organisation, Una Dillion, said that this technical glitch is unique to Ulster Bank - and it cannot spread to other banks:
"This is not a problem with a clearing system or online banking or any of those things, this is a specific accounting issue at Ulster Bank", she said
"It has had a detrimental effects on payments into and out of Ulster Bank accounts it has not effected the other banks technically".
