Rabbitte: Sacking whistleblower confidant was 'inevitable'

The Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte, said Oliver Connolly's sacking as the go-between for Garda whistleblowers was "inevitable".

Rabbitte claimed the office of the confidential recipient was "misconceived" and never served the purpose it was intended to.

"That was inevitable … just look at the number of complaints over six or seven years … it never served the purpose that it was intended to. And that's no reflection on any individual that has occupied it," he said.

News of Oliver Connolly's sacking was announced by the Taoiseach yesterday, after a transcript where Mr Connolly told a Garda whistleblower that the Minister for Justice would "go after him" was leaked.

The announcement heaps further pressure on Alan Shatter, who is under fire over his handling of claims that the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission's offices were bugged.

Rabbitte says it was "inevitable" that the Government would do away with the office.
