Rabbitte again criticises banking inquiry plans

The Opposition is again hitting out at the Government's proposals for a banking inquiry.

A private Commission of Investigation style inquiry will look at what went wrong in the country's banks.

But it has already come under fire for not being held in public.

Labour's Pat Rabbitte said he knew the "game was up" when reports surfaced at the weekend that the inquiry could be in private.

"The whole merit of the inquiry, in terms of the catharsis that is needed in Irish society to confront economic regeneration, was to see all of the key players examined in public," Deputy Rabbitte said.

"This inquiry will shelter the key players from public scrutiny, and it will kick the process probably into the lifetime of the next Dáil."
