Rabbite: No plans to extend electric car charging point scheme

The energy minister has ruled out the prospect of letting people install charging points for electric cars for free.

Pat Rabbitte admitted Ireland will not be following the UK's lead by covering the cost of a charging point.

Households in Britain and the North can have a charging point fitted at their home for free, even if they don't have an electronic car, as a way of encouraging more people to drive eco-friendly cars.

Ireland is currently offering free charge points for the owners of the first 2,000 electric cars, but the minister said he has no plans to extend the scheme any further.
