Quinn defends re-hiring of retired teachers

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has defended the practice within his department of re-hiring retired teachers, saying he has temporarily rehired around 300 retired teachers following demand from schools.
Rurai Quinn says some principals had asked him to allow retired teachers remain on for an extra few weeks, so as to not disrupt exam students.
It emerged last week in the Dail that the Government is rehiring dozens of retired senior civil servants, including some who retired as recently as 10 weeks ago.
It is understood the chief medical officer for the Department of Social Protection, for example, is now back in his job on a salary of over 100,000 euro a year, after his retirement earlier this year.
Minister Rurai Quinn said he made the decision to temporarily rehire around 300 retired teachers as some schools had asked him to make provisions for exam students.
