Education Minister Ruairí Quinn said today that he has opened discussions with publishers to discuss lowering the cost of schoolbooks.

He said that the discussions are unlikely to be completed in time for the new school term beginning in September, however.

He made the remarks as he announced a new campaign to improve literacy in schools, which involves spending more time teaching reading and maths.

"I had a meeting with some people from the publishing world, not necessarily a representative meeting, I've asked for further meetings with them, and we're looking at ways at which we can reduce the cost of schoolbooks to families,"

When asked if this would be implemented in time for the next school term, he replied: "I don't really think so, to be honest with you."
