A man in his late 50s is being questioned by Gardaí in connection with the stabbing of a woman at a house in Co Cavan.

Questioning of well known republican continues after Cavan stabbing

A man in his late 50s is being questioned by Gardaí in connection with the stabbing of a woman at a house in Co Cavan.

The woman in her late 40s suffered serious injuries when she was stabbed in the upper body at the house yesterday.

Gardaí were called to a house in Kilnaleck yesterday afternoon where they discovered a woman with serious stab wounds.

The woman was rushed to Cavan General Hospital where she is still being treated - and is said to be in a serious, but stable condition.

A man in his late 50s was arrested in connection with the attack.

He is being held in Cavan Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice act.

It is understood the man is a well known republican and served a sentence for a serious crime committed in the mid 1990s.

The scene at Kilnaleck is being preserved for a full technical examination.
