The joint owners of a Galway pub were taking legal advice today ahead of a formal deadline to re-introduce the smoking ban on their premises.

The joint owners of a Galway pub were taking legal advice today ahead of a formal deadline to re-introduce the smoking ban on their premises.

The Western Health Board has given the landlords of Fibber Magee’s in Eyre Square until 4pm today to comply with the fledgling law.

If they ignore the deadline, a High Court injunction will be taken out against them.

Ciaran Levanzin and Ronan Lawless are understood to have admitted that they do not want to go to jail and would not defy such an order.

They have been issued with two warnings over the past two days to stop breaching the Public Health (Tobacco) Amendment Act 2004.

Health Minister Micheál Martin has vowed to crack down on anyone caught breaking the law.

The outcome of today’s action could quell fears of a revolt within the industry as some publicans continue to back the rebellion.
