PSNI conduct leaflet drop in Paul McCauley murder probe
Police investigating the sectarian murder of Paul McCauley have conducted a leaflet drop in parts of Derry.
Flyers were distributed in the Fountain estate and Irish Street area close to the scene of the 2006 attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey from the PSNI Serious Crime Branch said he hoped it would prompt people to speak out.
He said: “Today’s leaflet drop is part of our renewed attempts to reach out to those individuals who we believe have information about the attack on Paul and his friends and those involved.
“Detectives are available to speak with anyone who decides they want to talk to us.”
Mr McCauley a 38-year-old Catholic spent almost a decade in a vegetative state after he was beaten by loyalists at a barbecue in the Waterside. He died in a care home last month.
Police stepped up their investigation following Mr McCauley’s death and to date six people have been arrested.
Piper John McClements, 24, previously known as Daryl Proctor, from the Fountain area of the city, has been charged with murder.
One suspect is to be reported to the Public Prosecution Service while four other individuals have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Mr McCauley’s family has pursued a long campaign for justice.
The father of one was 29 when he attended the barbecue for a friend who was moving away from Northern Ireland in July 2006.
A gang of up to 15 people emerged from nearby bushes and attacked him and two friends as they were clearing up after the meal in the early hours of the morning.
He suffered severe head injuries.
