PSNI arrest on-the-run murderer Valliday

A convicted murderer who had been on the run after escaping custody during a hospital visit has been arrested.

Police said they detained Thomas Valliday, 27, this evening.

Valliday is a life-sentence prisoner at Maghaberry high-security prison in the North.

He had been at large since fleeing from prison staff during a visit to the Ulster hospital in Dundonald on the outskirts of Belfast on Friday.

The killer was convicted in 2010 of the murder of west Belfast republican Frank “Bap” McGreevy.

Valliday, also from west Belfast, was handed a minimum 17-year life tariff.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Superintendent Sean Wright said: “Following extensive police enquiries and with support and assistance from the public, officers arrested Thomas Valliday in Belfast earlier this evening.

“He will be taken for interview by police before being returned to prison in due course.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public in helping police to get this dangerous individual back into custody and in keeping people safe.”
