Property tax controversy on Cabinet agenda

The Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, is to brief the Cabinet today on the controversy over the property tax payment methods.

Noonan held talks yesterday evening with the Chairperson of the Revenue Commissioners, Josephine Feehily, in connection with the controversy surrounding payment options for the 2014 property tax.

Homeowners who wish to pay by a single lump sum will have their payment deducted this month.

She will also face questions on the issue when she appears before the Oireachtas Finance Committee on Thursday.

Revenue has placed ads in today's national newspapers to try to clarify the confusion over the payment options.

I welcome the emphasis that is now being put on communications," Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said.

"I think it's important that every effort is made to facilitate the compliant taxpayer."
