An investigation is underway into a fatal accident at the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) pharmaceutical plant in Co Waterford.

The incident happened in the grounds of the company's plant in Dungarvan at around 3pm this afternoon.

It’s understood contractors were cutting trees in the grounds of the pharmaceutical plant at the time. The victim is understood to be a 37-year-old man from the area.

"An incident took place on the grounds of the GSK site in Clogherane, Dungarvan at approximately 3pm this afternoon involving a member of the public," a spokesperson for GSK said.

"The person was transferred to Waterford Regional Hospital by ambulance and was subsequently pronounced dead.

" An Gárda Síochána attended the scene and the Health and the Safety Authority (HSA) has been notified."

The incident is currently under investigation.

The plant site is located in the Clogherane area outside Dungarvan, close to the main Cork road.

About 700 people are currently employed at GSK’s two manufacturing operations in Dungarvan, which opened in 1981 and 1987.

The Dungarvan facilities are used for the manufacture of over-the-counter medications such as Panadol, Solpadeine and Coldrex as well as dental fixatives and denture cleaning tablets.

The multi-national pharmaceutical company also employs several hundred people in Cork.
