A prisoner who has died after being found unconscious in the Midlands Prison this morning has been named as Michael Keating.

A prisoner who has died after being found unconscious in the Midlands Prison this morning has been named as Michael Keating.

36-year-old Mr Keating had been serving a two and a half year sentence for the theft of a vehicle.

The Kildare native was found unresponsive in his cell at 6.30am, he was then brought to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise - where later passed away.

A post mortem examination is to be carried out today, the Prison service is investigating the circumstances around Mr Keating's death.
