Prison service advertises for e-tagging tender

The Irish Prison Service is hoping to use electronic tags on low-risk prisoners on temporary release, both in hospital and in the community.

The organisation has placed an
advert
on the Government's e-tender website seeking the service of electronic monitoring, using satellite tracking.

It is hoped the move will save the taxpayer money.

Currently, when a prisoner is hospitalised, they are continuously guarded by two prison officers on a 24-hour basis.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter is still considering whether or not to introduce a full project of electronic monitoring across the prison service for high-risk offenders once they are released from prison.
