The Irish Prison Officers Association is calling for the workplace smoking ban to be extended to include all of Ireland's jails.
Such facilities were excluded from the ban when it was introduced two years ago amid fears that it would cause undue hardship for prisoners.
However, prison officers say this is putting their health at risk.
The issue is due to be debated at the IPOA's annual conference in Killarney today.
