President marks anniversary of Easter Rising

President Michael D Higgins has led a ceremony marking the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

President Michael D Higgins has led a ceremony marking the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Defence Minister Alan Shatter and several Government ministers also attended the annual service at Arbour Hill in Dublin.

The President laid a wreath at a memorial to commemorate those who died in the Rising, following an armed guard procession from the Church of the Most Sacred Heart where a special Mass was held.

Relatives of those who fought in the Rising also attended the church and memorial service.

Among them were family members of the revolutionary Cathal Brugha.

Arbour Hill is the resting place for several leaders of the Easter Rising who were executed.
