President Higgins led a state ceremony outside GPO in Dublin

A state ceremony has taken place outside the GPO on O'Connell Street in Dublin to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising.

It was led by President Micheal D. Higgins, who laid a wreath in honour of those who lost their lives in the rebellion of 1916.

Meanwhile, thousands have lined the streets of Dublin city centre to witness the Easter Rising Parade.

Today's State ceremony and parade are the centre piece of the State's 1916 centenary commemoration events.

A parade featuring thousands of members of the defence forces and emergency services paused on O'Connell bridge, as a State ceremony took place outside the GPO.

Children from the four provinces of Ireland laid bunches of daffodils at the pillars of the GPO.

Captain Peter Kelleher, whose Grandfather and Grand uncle were both members of the First Southern Brigade of the Old IRA in West Cork who fought in the war of Independence orated the 1916 Proclamation outside the GPO: “We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies to be sovereign and undefeatable.”

President Michael D Higgins laid a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland, to remember those who lost their lives in the Easter Rising.

A minute's silence was observed, before the national flag was raised to full past above the GPO.

The ceremony concluded with the national anthem a flypast by the Air Corps.

Around 4,000 members of the defence forces along with members of the emergency services marched from St Stephen's green to O'Connell street.

The parade is due to finish after 2pm on Bolton Street on the Northside of the city.
