Eight-year-old Ultan Hayes was rushed to Limerick Regional Hospital after the accident near his home and then transferred to Temple Street, where he lost his fight for life last night.

It is understood that Ultan had made his First Confession earlier in the day. He has four siblings

Ultan had been on a quad bike, which had been bought that day, with his 41-year-old father when it hit a stone wall in Whitegate, Co Clare at about 9.15pm on Thursday night. Both were thrown from the quad bike onto the road.

Ultan's father Brian Hayes was also taken to hospital but his injuries are reported not to be life-threatening.

Gardaí at Scariff are carrying out an investigation into the collision, and have described it as a “sad and tragic accident”.
